Expedition to Find Amelia Earhart’s Missing Plane Ends Without Success

A new expedition in the Pacific Ocean aimed at locating Amelia Earhart’s missing aircraft has ended without success. No wreckage of the Lockheed Electra 10-E, which disappeared in 1937, was found.

A 17-member research team investigated a formation known as the “Taraia Object” on Nikumaroro Island in Kiribati. The object, first identified in satellite imagery in 2020, was believed to be a possible aircraft wreck. However, according to findings released on October 19, the formation was determined to consist of large pieces of driftwood washed ashore.

Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared on July 2, 1937, while flying from Papua New Guinea to Howland Island during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Despite 89 years of searches, the aircraft’s wreckage has never been found, and the mystery surrounding their disappearance remains unsolved.
